QLD: Stand off with suicidal man ends

BRISBANE, Dec 24 AAP - Psychiatric workers will assess a 37-year-old man who was involved
in a standoff with police for more than four hours today when he threatened to kill himself
with a knife in his Gold Coast home.

The standoff started at 5:30pm (AEST) when the man, who was alone in the unit in Broad
Street, Labrador, began making threats and held the knife to his chest.

Police sealed off the street and declared a state of emergency when the man threatened to
kill himself in his barricaded unit.

A police spokesman said professional negotiators were called in to convince the man to stop
threatening suicide.

Police entered the premises at 10pm and arrested the man, who was taken to hospital for
psyciatric assessment.
