NSW: Suspicious package found on train at Kirrawee
One line of Sydney's Cityrail network was disrupted for two hours this morning after
a suspicious package was found on a train.
A Cityrail spokesman says a package was found on the city-bound train at Kirrawee,
in southern Sydney, about 8.20 am (AEDT).
The spokesman says they followed Olympic protocol, and the package is in the hands of the police.
Services on the line were resumed at 10.44 am.
A police spokeswoman says the package was found by a guard on a Cronulla-to-city train,
which was evacuated at Kirrawee.
The Cityrail spokesman says the area was cleared within five to seven minutes and the
station area closed off.
A passenger who boarded the train at Kirrawee, ELMAR PLATZER, says he actually touched
the package.
He says he entered the upper level of the second-last carriage and went to sit in a
vacant seat where the package lay.
It appeared to be an empty VB beer bottle with no label, and underneath it there was
a square thing.
Mr PLATZER said it looked like a sandwich -- two square brown timber plates and something
he couldn't see.
He says it was all wrapped up in clingwrap.
