NSW: Taxi fares due to rise by
New South Wales cab fares are set to rise following an application by the Taxi Council
for a major fare restructure.
A Council spokeswoman says the application to the Transport Department includes a price
increase to absorb higher fuel costs.
She's declined to comment, however, on reports the rise is in the vicinity of 15 per cent.
She says the department's not expected to make a decision until after Easter.
Passengers were last hit with a fare increase last year, when it went up 7.8 per cent
when the GST was introduced.
A spokesman for Transport Minister CARL SCULLY says a fare increase of 15 per cent
is unreasonable and would be rejected.
